The Principal Judge of Uganda, Hon. Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo has called on law enforcement and justice sector institutions to adopt a more responsive and compassionate approach when handling cases of gender-based violence.

Justice Abodo made the remarks on April 16th, during the Gulu High Court Open Day in Gulu City that was held under the theme “Justice begins with you: Report Gender-Based Violence. Access Justice.”

Addressing stakeholders, Justice Abodo specifically pointed to key institutions including the police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the courts, and the prisons, urging them to work more effectively to ensure survivors access justice.

She warned that many victims of sexual violence are being re-traumatized by the system, citing situations where survivors report cases to police but find no officers available, or visit the Office of the DPP only to receive no assistance.

Justice Abodo questioned how justice can be achieved under such circumstances, noting that such experiences discourage victims from reporting crimes.

She emphasized that sexual violence is deeply personal and requires a gender-sensitive and trauma-informed approach urging law enforcers and judicial officers to listen to survivors, believe them, and take prompt action.
