Amuru District Ranks Lowest in ART Uptake

Amuru district has been ranked the lowest in antiretroviral therapy (ART) uptake according to a reporting release by Uganda Aids Commission.ART is a treatment for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) that uses a combination of medications to stop the virus from reproducing in the body.

According to the data; the uptake of Antiretroviral therapy in Amuru district stands at 79.3% followed by Gulu and Pader districts with 80% and Omoro district at 80.5%

Lamwo district has 82.9%, Nwoya district 82.1%, Agago 83.8% while Gulu City ranked best at 86.5%.

Victor Rwengabo, the Uganda Aids Commission Mid-North Zonal Coordinator express concern over the low uptake of the drugs in region saying the low uptake leads to relapses and further spread of the virus.

According to Rwengabo, the Uganda Aids Commission is engaging Amuru district health department to further sensitize the positive living people to prioritize taking their medication.

Currently, the HIV/AIDS prevalence in Acholi Sub region stands at 7.7% while the national prevalence stands at 4.2%.
