The price of tomatoes has shot up in Gulu City and surrounding areas due to low supplies from outside the region and limited local production with supplies coming from far areas of Luweero, Masaka, Kenya and other areas.

Vendors at Gulu Main Market say fewer farmers in the region are growing tomatoes, forcing traders to rely on suppliers from outside Acholi, where stocks are also scarce.

Speaking to Mega FM, Lucy Alum, a vendor at Gulu Main Market, said a medium box of tomatoes that used to sell for between UGX 130,000 and UGX 150,000 shillings is now going for UGX 250,000 shillings.

She added that a big box, previously bought at UGX 250,000 shillings, now costs around UGX 550,000 and UGX 600,000 shillings.

At retail level, a single tomato is selling for UGX 1,000 shillings, while a heap that used to go for UGX 1,000 shillings now costs between UGX 2,000 and UGX 3,000 shillings.
