District 20,800 Learners Yet to Report to School in Amuru

By Norbert Mao & Tolit Ivan

At least 20,800 school-going children in Amuru District are yet to report back to school for the second term despite three weeks into the term.

According to a report from the District Education Department, only 31,200 learners have returned to school by Tuesday out of a total enrolment of 52,000 pupils while 20,800 learners representing 40% of the total enrolment are still at home.

John Bosco Opiyo, the Acting Amuru District Chief Administrative Officer, expressed dissatisfaction with parents who have failed to send their children back to school despite the term being underway.

Meanwhile, 75% of the pupils in Gulu district have reported to schools for the second term leaving behind 25% of pupils at home.

The District Education Officer, Atim Harriet Okot, confirmed the report saying the remaining 25% of the learners are still at home despite schools being fully operational.

Atim warned that prolonged absence from school could negatively affect learners’ academic performance and ultimately impact the district’s overall examination results and appealed to parents and guardians to prioritize education and ensure that all school-going children return to class immediately.
