President Yoweri Museveni has accused money lenders of frustrating the registration exercise of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party members across the country.
President Museveni said some Ugandans who are members of the NRM party were frustrated by what he described as criminality of money lenders. He explained that the money lenders took National Identity Cards as collateral for loans, making it hard for some NRM members to register in the party register.
The President warned that if needs be, he will push for a tough law that bars money lenders from taking National ID as loan security.
Museveni who is also the National Chairperson of the ruling party also accused NRM Village Chairperson for doing nothing to protect vulnerable Ugandans from such exploitation.
The exercise was conducted between March 13 and 17, 2024. According to the Central Executive Committee (CEC), 18.3 million Ugandans registered in the yellow book as members of the governing party, NRM.
