Amuru District fertility rate has dropped from 7.2% in the last five years to 5.3%, according to a report released by the Uganda Bureau of statistics.
Geoffrey Orsbon Oceng, the Resident district Commissioner, has attributed the drop in fertility rate to excessive consumption of illicit alcohol.
The vice was also reiterated by Michael Lakony, the district LCV Chairperson, who said excessive alcohol consumption is killing men in the district.
In 2017 Amuru District adopted an alcoholic control ordinance to regulate high levels of alcohol consumption to increase production and save lives.
The piece of legislation was to regulate the time bars open their doors to members of the public, packaging of alcoholic drinks and licensing of drinking places.
It stipulates that those seeking to sell alcoholic drinks must ensure that their places are located more than half a kilometre from education institutions.
The others are all packaging must be in breakable bottles as opposed to polythene sachets, restricts the smallest quantity to 250 millilitres and establishes a district licensing committee to review licenses of operators amongst others.
