The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit has shot dead two suspected terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of Kampala, during an intelligence-led operation carried out early Tuesday morning.
The suspects, who were reportedly armed, were intercepted and neutralized as part of heightened security measures ahead of the annual Martyrs Day celebrations scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, the operation was based on credible intelligence and forms part of ongoing efforts to prevent any potential threats to national security.
He called on members of the public to remain calm but vigilant, urging them to report any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities to security personnel for immediate attention.
Martyrs Day, commemorated at the Namugongo shrines, draws tens of thousands of pilgrims annually from across Uganda and beyond, making it one of the country’s most significant religious and public events.
The UPDF and other security agencies have been conducting security sweeps in and around the capital in anticipation of the pilgrimage.
While the identities and affiliations of the deceased suspects have not been disclosed, security officials say investigations are ongoing.
