A local farmer in Langele village, Lii sub county in Nwoya district has become the latest person to be trampled to death by stray elephants in Acholi sub region.

Opio Robbin (52) was trampled to death on Thursday at around 8pm after he went to chase away a group of stray elephants that had invaded his garden.

The elephants are suspected to have crossed from Murchison Falls National park.

John Bosco Okullo, the former local council III chairperson Koch Goma sub county confirmed the unfortunate incident.

This is the fourth incident in less than four months that stray elephants have attacked and killed residents outside conservation areas in the Acholi sub-region.

Last month a 48-year-old woman died after being trampled by a marauding elephant in Oryebo village, Namokora sub-county in Kitgum district.

Also last month, a 22-year-old man was trampled to death by a stray elephant in Ceke village, Lii sub-county in Nwoya District.

A month before the incident, a 12-year-old boy was also trampled to death by herds of elephants in Kibira Village, Got Apwoyo sub-county on August 25.

Since 2022, Nwoya district has recorded a total of 48 injuries and seven lives lost after being attacked by stray elephants. The Wildlife Act 2019 calls for compensation to a person who suffers bodily injury or is killed or suffers damage to his or her property by wild animals.
