The Acholi Revival Movement has unveiled the first batch of 59 beneficiaries for its pilot scholarship fund targeting less privileged but bright children in the Acholi Sub-region.
The scholarship fund dubbed Dero Kwan loosely translated as education granary in the Acholi language is one of the projects under Rocco Paco, a revival movement intended to address the fundamental collapse of the Acholi Society.
The initiative was rolled out in December 2023 in Gulu City and is being spearheaded by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo Chigamoi and former Uganda People’s Congress Party President Olara Otunnu.
Filda Ojok Lanyero, a member of the select committee of the Dero Kwan initiative said on Monday the first batch of beneficiaries were selected after passing all the requirements set by the committee.
It targeted seven children from each of the eight districts in the Acholi Sub-region and two from Kitgum Municipality and Gulu City respectively.
The beneficiaries included 20 girls and 39 boys who completed their Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in 2024 and will now join senior one in schools within Acholi Sub-region.
Rocco Paco initiative is seeking to raise 2.5 billion shillings annually to educate children in the Acholi Sub-region through voluntary contribution of 1,000 shillings per household. By December last year, a total of 380 million shillings was raised towards the course.
