A total of 1,917 cases of domestic violence were registered in Gulu district in the last seven months. 1,489 of the cases were against females while 428 cases were against males, all registered between November 2023 to May, 2024.
The cases include denial of resources which accounted for 955 cases, psychological violence with 461 cases, physical assault with 255 cases, sexual violence 52 cases. Defilement accounted for 76 cases, child marriage 14 cases, 54 rape cases and 20 forced marriages.
Goretty Oketch, the Gulu District Community Development Officer said the situation is worrying and requires concerted efforts to be addressed.
Vicky Atim, the Vice Chairperson Gulu District attributed the rising cases of domestic violence to factors such as land conflicts, negligence by men, hunger, poverty and high consumption of illicit drugs. She said the district has now embarked on a community sensitization to tackle the problem.
Aswa River Region registered 801 cases of domestic violence, according to the 2023 Police Annual Crime Report.,
