The Iteso Cultural Union Paramount Chief, Paul Sande Emolot, and his counterpart from the Kumam Cultural Union, Raphael Otaya, met President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday to discuss the circumstances surrounding the arrest of retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu.
The meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, took place after the conclusion of the Cultural Leaders Conference at State House Entebbe.
According to Steven Ojacor, spokesperson for the Iteso Cultural Union, the cultural leaders sought to engage the President on ways of amicably resolving the issues facing Gen. Elwelu amid growing concerns among communities in Teso and the wider Ateker region. Elwelu was reportedly arrested on Monday.
Ojacor said the cultural leaders made an emotional appeal to Museveni, urging him to exercise his authority and parental leadership to address the matter, which has generated considerable concern among sections of the Teso and wider Ateker community.
The cultural leaders also urged Museveni to facilitate dialogue between Elwelu and the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, should the allegations stem from a misunderstanding between the two.
Ojacor said President Museveni had promised to engage Elwelu in dialogue and assured the cultural leaders of his safety as security agencies concluded their investigations.
