A robbery involving UGX 11M in Lira City took a dramatic turn after a university student jumped onto a suspected getaway vehicle in an attempt to recover his money.

The 32-year-old student, identified as Ogwal Francis of Uganda Martyrs University, Ngetta Campus, was reportedly targeted shortly after withdrawing UGX 11 million shillings from KCB Bank on Thursday morning.

According to police, three suspected robbers, including a woman, allegedly grabbed the money near Mama Supermarket before speeding away in a Toyota Rumion registration number UBR 845U.

In a desperate attempt to stop them, Ogwal chased the vehicle, jumped onto its bonnet, smashed the windscreen and held on while calling for help.

The suspects’ escape came to an end in Otangula Village, Kole District, where an alerted community joined the pursuit, forcing them to abandon the vehicle and flee.

Police say three suspects, including a 25-year-old woman identified as Ninsiima Prisca, have since been arrested. The other two male suspects were apprehended in Aboke, Kole District.

The North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, and the acting Public Relation Officer for Aswa East and Aswa West Region SP Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the report saying the vehicle has been recovered but was vandalised by an angry mob. However, the stolen UGX 11 million shillings remain missing.
