Lightning Strike Kills Two Students in Amuru

By Tolit Ivan

Two siblings, both students of Pabbo Comprehensive College, were last night struck to death by lightning in Turo Cell, Pabbo Town Council in Amuru District.

The deceased Brenda Atimango (19) a senior two student and Lakot Gloria Mercy (18) a senior one student, were struck at around 2:30am when it was raining.

The siblings met their death when they were asleep in their grass thatched hut.

Okumu Richard Pa’ Kamara, the Local Council Three Chairperson, Pabbo Town Council, confirmed the unfortunate incident saying, both died on the spot.

For the last five years, Acholi sub region has been experiencing numerous cases of lightning strikes that have killed over 40 people and left dozens with life changing injuries.

In December, last year, 14 people, mainly children, were killed while 34 survived with life threatening injuries after being struck by lightning in Palabek Refugee settlement camp in Palabek Ogili Sub County, Lamwo District. The deceased and victims were struck from a church.

Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has blamed the rampant cases of lightning strikes being reported in Acholi sub region on the changing climate.
