Geoffrey Orsbon Oceng, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner

The Amuru district security committee and the district education department have temporarily closed Lwani Memorial College in Atiak Sub County over attempted strike by the students. The school was closed on Monday following the students attempted strike on Sunday night.

The attempted strike reportedly began on Sunday at around 7:00 pm after the school management declined the students demand to dance trans night in celebration of the school’s first ever victory in the 2026 Girl’s Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Football Competition.

The situation escalated, leading to the deployment of police at the school through out the night to restore calm at the school.

Akera Keith Aggrey, the Secretary for Education and Sports Amuru District Local Government, says the school will remain closed until the school board convenes a meeting next week to decide on the next course of action.

Geoffrey Orsbon Oceng, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner, confirmed the report saying investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Lwani Memorial College has a student population of over 350 learners.

A survey conducted by Decisive Research and Training Organization (DRTO) Limited on Secondary Schools Games and Sports Violence in Arua City has reported that the influence of old students and drug abuse among students are among the major drivers for violent cases registered every year during the secondary schools’ games and sports.
