The National Council of Sports, (NCS) on Tuesday signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gulu University for the construction of training ground in preparation for the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
The sport facility worth UGX 13.5 Billion will be constructed on a11 acre piece of land in Forest Cell, Laroo-Pece division in Gulu City.
It’s expected to help AFCON players who might after landing in Gulu city through the Airfield could wish to stay and train in Gulu before going to Lira City that has Akii-Bua Stadium, one of the venues selected to host AFCON 2027.
Uganda has joined other East African Countries in co-hosting the AFCON 2027 and is committing to renovate and build many sports facilities across the country.
Development of these training grounds is expected to kick off before the end of January 2026, and will be executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.
The construction will be supervised by the Ministry of Works and Transport as lead consultants.
According to James Ojok Onono, the Public Relations Officer, Gulu University, the facility will have 1,000 seats, two changing rooms and running track among other things.
