Uganda to Invest Over US$600M in Regional City Infrastructure

Agency

The Government of Uganda is set to invest more than 600 million United States dollars in infrastructure development across regional cities, aiming to accelerate urban transformation, stimulate economic growth, and improve service delivery.

Minister for Finance Matia Kasaija, represented by Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi, said on Thursday at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat in Kampala that the funding will target key urban infrastructure, including roads, markets, electricity distribution, street lighting, water supply, drainage, and sanitation facilities.

Ggoobi explained that the investment will support rapid urbanization and position regional cities as centers of trade, industry, and employment creation. “Infrastructure is the backbone of urban growth.

The official noted that a major focus of the investment will be on tarmacking city roads to eliminate mud, reduce dust pollution, and improve mobility for people and goods.

Street lighting will also be prioritized to enhance security and extend business hours for traders, transport operators, and service providers. Ggoobi emphasized that the initiative builds on earlier successful interventions in cities such as Gulu, where road improvements, drainage systems, and urban planning have transformed the city’s outlook and economic potential
