UHRC Raises Alarm Over High GBV Cases in Gulu

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has expressed alarm at the high incidence of gender-based violence (GBV) in reported in Gulu district.

According to reports by local authorities, a total of 400 cases of GBV have been reported in the district in the last five months.This translate to 80 cases being reported on a monthly basis and 20 cases weekly.

The sub counties with the highest cases are Owalo, Paibona and Patiko sub counties.

Speaking during a community barraza on Tuesday from Owalo trading centre, Fiona Opoka, the UHRC Regional Coordinator, said the surge in GBV cases in the district is worrying, urging all the stakeholders to join the fight in to curb the vice.

Opiyo Christopher Ateker, the Gulu District LCV Chairperson, attributed the rise in GBV cases in the district on poverty, hunger and alcoholism.

Moses Ogwang, the Community Liaison Officer Gulu District Central Police Station says police have now embark on community policing to curb the vice.

According to the 2024 annual crime report, a total of 14,073 cases of domestic violence across the country.
