The Government, through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), has earmarked 69,000 hunger-stricken households in Agago District to receive emergency food relief.
The intervention comes after 18 people reportedly died due to hunger related illnesses and 351 admissions due to acute malnutrition linked to severe food shortages.
Wilson Otto, the Agago District LCV Chairperson, confirmed the development, saying the district expects to receive both food relief and seeds before the end of this week.
The development comes at a time when most parts of the Acholi Sub region continue to experience severe food shortages following poor harvests caused by prolonged dry spell which destroyed food crops during the first planting season.
On Monday, Local Council Five (LCV) chairpersons from across the Acholi Sub-region, under their umbrella body, the Acholi Local Government Leaders Forum, declared a state of emergency over the worsening hunger situation after reporting dozens of hunger-related deaths across the region.
The Government, through the Office of the Prime Minister, has allocated UGX 50 billion to provide emergency food relief to households affected by severe drought in different parts of the country.
