The football fraternity in Uganda and beyond is in mourning following the death of Soccer Club Villa captain, David Owori.
According to a statement from SC Villa President Omar Ahmed dated August 5th, Owori, 27, succumbed to injuries he sustained on Tuesday evening after he was reportedly struck with a paving stone by assailants near Kibuye Primary School.
He was rushed to Case Hospital in critical condition, where he was receiving urgent medical attention.
SC Villa has now confirmed and announced through its official X page that Owori has passed away, succumbing to the injuries he got after the attack.
According to the statement, Police have been informed, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and death are underway.
SC Villa has asked fans and the public to keep Owori’s family in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
The Federation of Uganda Football Association, FUFA, Uganda football governing body in a statement posted on the official X Page sent their deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and the entire SC Villa fraternity.
Meanwhile Parliament on Wednesday observed a minute of silence in honour of Uganda Cranes fallen midfielder, as legislators called for stronger action to curb rising violent crime.
Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Isanga Nakadama, representing the Government, offered condolences and indicated that consultations would follow.
Kampala has witnessed a disturbing rise in violent robberies and assaults by gangs using blunt instruments, paving stones, iron bars and similar weapons, that leave victims critically injured or dead. The attacks periodically spark public outcry over policing capacity and the everyday insecurity faced by ordinary citizens.
