The management of Gulu Senior Secondary School have confirmed the tragic death of the school bus controller following a road accident involving the school bus that occurred on Wednesday night in Kiryandongo District.
The accident happened at around 11:30 PM near Kigumba, Kiryandongo District along the Kampala–Gulu highway as the school bus, registration number UAX 944N, was transporting students and staff to Jinja City for a study tour.
The bus controller, identified as Komakech Walter Obunya, died on the spot while 17 students sustained injuries, two of them critically.
According to the school headteacher, Irene Mwaka, the bus was carrying 60 students and four teachers at the time of the crash.
A photographer accompanying the group, identified as Oloya Denis, sustained serious injuries, his leg was cut off, while one of the teachers suffered fractured arms. The driver escaped with minor injuries.
In a related past case, on September 27th, 2025 , a bus belonging to Acholi Province that was carrying learners from Favor of God Primary School in Gulu City also got involved in a road accident along the Kampala Gulu Highway while returning from an educational tour. Although no fatalities were reported, a few learners sustained injuries.
