Gulu University officials and security personnel have cautioned students against late-night outings, excessive alcohol consumption and lone night walks, warning that such behaviour exposes them to attacks.
The warning follows the killing of John Bosco Ngire, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Humanities.
Ngire was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants at about 4 a.m. on October 10 while returning to his hostel after a night out.
Speaking at a security meeting convened by the university on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor Professor George Ladaah Openjuru condemned the killings and urged security agencies to intensify patrols to protect students, staff and other members of the university community.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed concern about what he described as increasing alcohol consumption and drug abuse among students, noting that growing demand for alcohol had attracted several drinking establishments to areas near the university campus.
Gulu Resident City Commissioner Ambrose Onoria urged students to prioritise their studies and exercise restraint in their consumption of alcohol and participation in late-night outings and sexual activity, warning that such behaviour could expose them to security risks and undermine their academic goals.
