Lalogi Sub County Records First Suicide Case of 2026

By Tolit Ivan

Lalogi sub county in Omoro District has registered its first reported suicide case of 2026 following the death of a 26 year old woman who was reportedly struggling to repay UGX 200,000 she borrowed from a local savings group. The deceased has been identified as Catherine Akutoo, a resident of Minjar Village .

Akutoo’s body was discovered in Agwari Swamp in Minjar Village on October 10, 2026, a day after she went missing.

According to local leaders, members of the Lubanga Mamiyo Women’s Savings Group reportedly confronted Akutoo over the unpaid UGX 200,000 loan on Independence Day, October 9, and closed her house. She reportedly borrowed the money from the group six months ago and was expected to repay it before Independence Day but failed to meet the deadline.

Richard Alima, the Lalogi Sub County Three chairperson, confirmed the incident, saying Akutoo was a mother of three children.

The incident highlights concerns about the pressures that financial difficulties and debt-related disputes can place on vulnerable individuals and the importance of accessible mental health support within communities.

Police in the Aswa River Region have attributed suicide cases to several factors, including domestic violence, illness, poverty, drug abuse and disputes.
