Hunger Forces 12,000 Pupils Out of School in Lamwo

By Tolit Ivan

A severe hunger crisis driven by prolonged drought and climate change has forced massive numbers of school children to drop out of classrooms across Lamwo District, according to the district education department.

District education reports indicate that out of 40,000 pupils enrolled in government-aided primary schools, about 12,000 have dropped out of school.

Jore Washington, the district Senior Inspector of Schools expressed concern that more pupils could drop out of school or continue missing classes if food insecurity persists.

Jore appealed to the government, humanitarian organizations and other development partners to provide food relief to affected communities to help keep children in school.

The situation comes amid reports of hunger-related deaths and severe malnutrition cases in the district earlier this year.

In June 2026, Lamwo District recorded eight deaths linked to hunger-related complications, while 126 other people were hospitalized with severe malnutrition as the food crisis intensified.
